History of Juneteenth

June Nineteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is an important date in American history. Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) is celebrated as the day in 1865 when Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The troop's arrival came two and a half years after former President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. Though the Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in 1863, it took years for news to reach the southern states, resulting in a significant delay before many learned of their newfound freedom.  Juneteenth commemorates the true freeing of the slaves and is a time for communities to come together and engage in cultural events, parades, music performances, and educational activities that honor the historical significance of this day.
